Laxatives are medical substances designed to speed up bowel activity and reduce constipation problems of the body. In the recent years, the use of this substance had been become popular and more and more people are patronizing it for the purpose of losing weight. However, overdose of laxative intake for weight loss can lead to harmful effects. Let us learn more about these effects and other important things about laxatives and weight loss.
Laxatives refer to any food substances, medicines, or chemical compounds that stimulate bowel activity. These substances are not harmful and toxic. It only becomes dangerous if taken abusively. There are different types of laxatives found in the market today. Apart from being a basic medication in expediting bowel movement and relieving constipation problems, laxatives also have the notion in helping people to lose weight. It stimulates the bowel activity rate and prevent large intestine to absorb minerals and water. On the other hand, diarrhea may result if regular intake of laxatives is done since it may affect fat absorption in the body.

Many people are blinded by the notion of using laxatives for weight loss. Two of the most dominant laxatives used today are the dieter’s tea and slim tea. Both dieter’s tea and slim tea work in similar functions in reducing body weight. However, slim tea consists of herbal ingredients such as rhubarb root, senna, buckthorn, aloe, cascara, and castor oil, all of which contains laxative properties. Its components give frequent stool passage and conduce bowel irritation may lead to diarrhea. Slim tea is also believed to aid digestion, burn fats, relieve stress, curb appetite, lower blood pressure, and boost the immune system. According to a study, slim tea has more fat burning properties than green tea.
Laxatives are not highly recommended by experts in losing weight as overdose of this medication may lead to diarrhea or excessive lose of body fluid. If you are constantly using this medication, you should be conscious enough on its side effects. These effects may include vomiting, stomach cramps, rectal bleeding, electrolyte disorder, dehydration, chronic diarrhea, nausea, and fainting. Eating disorders such as binge and compulsive eating, anorexia, and bulimia may also happen.
Continuous intake of laxatives for duration of time can permanently change the regular functioning patterns of your digestive system. Effects of chronic pains and constipation problems may lead to removal of colon thru surgery. The loss of essential nutrients from the body and weakening of bones may also result with the continuous use of laxatives. In addition, consistent intake may also affect menstrual cycle and fertility in women.
The most harmful effect of laxatives overdose is having gastrointestinal tract damage, which is hard to repair. If this effect becomes complicated, it may even lead to stomach, colon, and anal cancer. Heart attacks are also possible with laxative overdose once side effects of electrolyte content and low potassium occur.
